Other Supported Programs

Graduate Medical Education (GME) is a period of specialty education that physicians undergo after graduation from medical school. Most residency programs last from three to seven years, and during this time residents provide patient care under the supervision of physician faculty. Current initiatives supported by Arizona AHEC include the following:

• The University of Arizona College of Medicine at University of Arizona Medical Center - South Campus Family Medicine Residency: Residents in family and internal medicine training programs through The University of Arizona College of Medicine - South Campus complete clinical rotations throughout rural Arizona as part of the rural curricula of each residency program. Medical residents receive preparation prior to their rural rotation, including an introduction to the multicultural situations they will experience.

• Northern Arizona AHEC and North Country HealthCare Family Practice Residency Development, Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education: Arizona AHEC is supporting North Country HealthCare in developing Arizona's first community-based family residency program. This will be the only Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) residency program in Arizona that utilizes the Teaching Health Center model. 

The University of Arizona Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, in partnership with AzAHEC and its Regional Centers, provides pipeline program activities including  Med-Start Health Careers Program for 11th grade Arizona high school students interested in health careers.
